The Musical Director
Prior to founding Northern Youth Symphonic Wind in 2009 where he has been our Musical Director ever since, Matthew Walmsley conducted the Willoughby City Junior Brass Band for many years. He has also conducted the Sydney Conservatorium Brass Choir and currently directs the bands at Artarmon Public School.

A professional tuba player currently Acting Principal Tuba of Opera Australia Orchestra, Matthew is also a popular session musician regularly recording film and television scores - recently contributing to the musical score for the 2018 3-D animated film, Peter Rabbit.
Matthew has had much success as a solo musician with multiple National solo titles and finalist in international solo competitions in Germany, Italy and Japan. In ensembles, he played in the Opening Ceremony of the Asian Games and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
As a teacher, Matthew has had positions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Newcastle and Monash University. He currently teaches at Barker College, Pymble Ladies College and Sydney Grammar School.
